We had a weekend full of hard labor. Everyone pitched in for this. Have you ever heard of Lantana? It is really a very pretty plant that blooms a lot of little flowers in clusters. It is very prolific. It is great for attracting butterflies. But not so great for livestock. As we learned the hard way. We lost two of our beef cattle to this pretty flower. No fun. We had a herd in two of our paddocks for 18 months and they never touched it. All of a sudden they decided to start eating it and that was the end of them. So we have been down two pastures since then, not allowing the cows or horses over there for fear of it happening again.
So today we tackled the pastures and DUG out ALL of the Lantana. We took two whole truckloads to the dump. There was a lot of it. Everyone pitched in to help, which is terrific. (we even had a friend offer to help!) There is great value to this hard work. I think it is so good for children to do this type of manual labor. And it feels wonderful when it is accomplished. You almost feel a little "pioneerish" working your land.
Also on our list of things to do -MUCK STALLS. The kids didn't get to that. That will have to wait until Monday or Tuesday. Tomorrow is Sunday our day of rest. And we are going to do just that!
This is Lantana

Before we moved to the country, I thought Lantana was a very pretty flowering bush. When I found out what it would do to animals, it wasn't so pretty anymore! It went from being considered a flower, to a pesky weed. We had to dig up and truck a lot away when we had our goats. That stuff has deep stubborn roots! Oh, and I almost forgot. The little town that we visit in Northern Georgia landscapes with the stuff. How funny!! People in Florida can't get rid of it fast enough.

I had a hard working day yesterday too. Didn't even get started on the lantana. Thankfully, we don't have animals who will eat it.

It's too bad that Lantana is so pretty! I bet you all slept well last night. :)
